What we roll for

Six situations. One rig class that was built for the terrain.

Every scenario below is something we have pulled out at least once this quarter. The off-road unit, the straps, and the winch are spec'd for terrain — not just a hook truck with a longer cable.

Stuck in volcanic cinder (Rim)
Loose cinder pans east of the Rim — Cinder Hills, FR-300 spurs, and the Sunset Crater flank. Single-rig winch or strap recovery, no mileage billed.
Mud & washes
Monsoon washes cut deep through the Coconino two-tracks from July through September. Capacity-rated straps, a snatch block on hand, and crew that has done it before.
Sand
Sand traps at the playa edges and on dry-lake approaches south of I-40. Tire-pressure plan, recovery boards, and a tractor-grade approach — not a hook truck.
Snow
Slide-offs and pack-outs at the 6,500–7,500 ft elevation band. Chains fit before the rig rolls, winch-line for the off-camber spots, and a patient pace on the egress.
OHV / UTV extraction
Side-by-sides buried to the axles, ATVs wedged between rocks, UTVs on their roofs. Class-3 recovery kits on every off-road unit, not a borrowed snatch strap from the bed.
Rolled vehicles
Righted and stabilized on-site, then a flatbed hand-off if it cannot be driven out. Photos for your insurer at pickup and drop-off — invoiced separately, no mileage on the back end.
Where we roll

Three terrain zones. One off-road dispatch muscle.

Off-road recovery is bounded by what the rig can actually climb onto. The zones below define where we keep an on-station crew — outside them we will tell you at dispatch whether we can reach you or whether the terrain says no.

  1. Zone 01

Two-tracks, spur roads, and cinder pans between Flagstaff and the San Francisco Peaks.

  2. Zone 02

Rim escarpment access, snow-line work in winter, and side-by-side staging lots east of the lake country.

  3. Zone 03

Permitted trailheads and marked routes across the Coconino and Apache-Sitgreaves systems. Permit etiquette briefed at dispatch.

FAQ

The questions off-road dispatch answers every week.

Pricing, response times, and what to hand your insurer — the same replies the off-road crew sends from the field.

On-station rigs in Coconino NF or on the Mogollon Rim can be on scene in 45–90 minutes depending on spur access. Cinder Hills and the east-side two-tracks average 60 minutes to first reach. We quote the ETA at triage — never a vague "we will try".
